Cinema purists and tech enthusiasts, rejoice: Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film, The Odyssey, has officially arrived in theaters today, July 17, 2026. Adapting Homer's epic tale of Odysseus' perilous journey home, the movie stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Zendaya. But beyond the star-studded cast and massive scope, the biggest talking point in the film and tech communities is the extremely limited, premium screening format: IMAX 15/70mm film.
Because Nolan filmed The Odyssey entirely on IMAX film cameras, the definitive, uncompromised version of the movie exists only on physical 15/70mm film. Yet, in an era dominated by digital projection, finding a theater capable of running this massive analog format is a challenge. Globally, only 41 theaters are running true IMAX 70mm prints, spark-plugging a massive wave of search interest and high ticket resale prices.
To understand why cinephiles are traveling across state lines and country borders, we have to look at the underlying projection technology. Traditional digital cinema projectors project in 2K or 4K resolution. Even state-of-the-art dual-laser IMAX systems, while incredibly sharp, rely on digital chips.
IMAX 15/70mm film is a completely different beast:
Why are there only 41 theaters worldwide showing The Odyssey in this format? The reason is purely mechanical. IMAX 70mm projectors are no longer manufactured, and they are notoriously complex. The film reels themselves weigh over 600 pounds and span up to six feet in diameter.
Operating these systems requires specialized, unionized projectionists who manually thread the film, clean the delicate glassware, and monitor the vacuum systems that keep the film flat against the lens. If a single sprocket fails, the entire screening must be halted. Consequently, many theaters transitioned to low-maintenance digital projectors in the 2010s, leaving only a dedicated handful of museums, science centers, and flagship commercial cinemas with functional film projection equipment.
If you want to experience The Odyssey in its native, uncompressed glory, here are the primary flagship venues where the 70mm film prints are currently running:
