CD PROJEKT RED has announced The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, a third expansion planned for 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Geralt returns as the lead, Fool's Theory is co-developing it, and more details are expected in late summer 2026.
This is not a routine patch or a next-gen upgrade. Songs of the Past is being described as the third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which makes it the first major return to Geralt's story since Blood and Wine in 2016.
That timing matters. The Witcher 3 launched in 2015, became one of the defining RPGs of the last decade, and then seemed to close Geralt's chapter with Toussaint. A new expansion in 2027 means CD PROJEKT is reopening one of its safest and most beloved worlds while the next main Witcher game continues its own longer development path.
The official announcement confirms four important points: Songs of the Past is a third Witcher 3 expansion, it launches in 2027, it is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and it brings players back to Geralt of Rivia for a new adventure.
CD PROJEKT also says more information will arrive in late summer 2026. For now, that means players should treat the title, platform list, 2027 window, Geralt's return, and Fool's Theory involvement as confirmed. Story location, price, exact release date, gameplay size, and save-transfer details are still unannounced.
Fool's Theory is not a random outsourcing name here. The studio includes developers with experience on The Witcher 3 and is already attached to The Witcher Remake. That gives this expansion a better chance of feeling like a real continuation instead of a detached side project.
The safest read is this: CD PROJEKT RED keeps creative control over one of its most important games, while Fool's Theory gives the project a dedicated team with direct Witcher experience. That is a practical setup for a late-life expansion.
1. Do not buy another copy of The Witcher 3 just for the expansion yet. Wait for price, edition, and upgrade details.
2. If you play on PC, watch the next system-requirement update closely. CD PROJEKT has signaled new requirements for the future Witcher 3 build.
3. If you are on PS4, Xbox One, or Switch, do not assume support. The confirmed platform list is current-gen consoles and PC only.
4. If you want to replay before launch, finish the base game and the two older expansions first. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are still the natural foundation for Geralt's late-game story.
This sits in the same open-world and RPG lane as our Elden Ring Nightreign update, Crimson Desert review, and April 2026 release watchlist. The key difference is trust: players already know The Witcher 3's world, combat rhythm, and writing style, so expectations will be higher than they are for most newly announced RPG content.
